Starr Stars at Las Vegas

10/15/02……… David Starr finally got his first win in the Craftsman Truck Series at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in the No. 75 Spears Manufacturing Chevy. His previous best finish came last month in his home state of Texas, at the Texas Motor Speedway. It was Starr’s 65th start in the series.

Starr started the race from the pole, took the lead when Ted Musgrave cut a tire, then battled Mike Bliss hard to the finish. The win was also a first for the Truck Series owner Wayne Spears whose trucks have been entered in almost all of the series races since it’s inception with the exception of two.

The top ten starters and how they finished:

  1. David Starr -- No. 75 Chevy – finished 1st
  2. *Brendan Gaughan -- No. 62 Dodge – finished 8th
  3. Rick Crawford -- No. 14 Ford – finished 6th
  4. Ryan Hemphill -- No. 4 Dodge -- finished 14th
  5. Ted Musgrave -- No. 1 Dodge – finished 9th
  6. Mike Bliss -- No. 16 Chevy – finished 2nd
  7. Jason Leffler -- No. 2 Dodge – finished 5th
  8. Coy Gibbs -- No. 20 Chevy – finished 15th
  9. Denis Setzer -- No. 46 Chevy – finished 3rd
  10. Terry Cook -- No. 29 Ford – finished 27th
* = Rookie

The points standings haven’t changed much. Mike Bliss is still the leader with 2922 points. Rick Crawford is second with a -85 point deficit. Ted Musgrave is third with a -149 and race winner David Starr is fourth with a -169. Jason Leffler moved up one spot to round out the top five with a -221. The way it stands, the top three have the opportunity to walk away from the next race with the top spot, although it would be a long shot.

There was only one truck race scheduled for the month of October. The next race coming up is at California Speedway on November 2nd. That race will be followed by an event at Phoenix Nov. 8th, before the season’s finale at Homestead on Nov. 15th.
